GIS Metadata
This information is presented to identify the data sources and digitizing methods used to create 1978 shapefiles.  These shapefiles then became the basis for updated 2000 mapping, modified by field data and additional sources.

ELECTRICITY LINES - Data Source Information

Method of Digital Input: Heads-up digitizing using ArcView 3.2, based on a 300-dpi scan of original map.  Electricity lines (all of 34.5 Kv) were digitized from two different maps.

Electricity lines north of latitude 27 45 N were digitized from:
Carta Geologica
G14A17 Villa Hidalgo - E.U.M. Coahuila Y Nuevo Leon, E.U.A. Texas.
Date of Original Map (First Edition): 1979
Scale of Original Map: 1:50,000
Projection of Original Map: Appears to have been created from aerial photographs, as there is a note in the legend section that indicates a date of flight (1976).

Electricity lines south of latitude 27 45 N were digitized from:
Carta de Uso del Suelo y Vegetacion
G14A27 Colombia - E.U.M. Tamaulipas y Coahuila, E.U.A. Texas.
Date of Original Map (First Edition): 1982
Scale of Original Map: 1:50,000
Projection of Original Map: Based on aerial photointerpretation and field verification. Flight is dated 1977.

Information on electricity lines was to be extracted from the geology maps (Carta Geologica). However, a geology map of the southern region of study was not available, and therefore we relied on the information found in the vegetation map (Carta de Uso de Suelo y Vegetacion).

Both maps were produced by the same publishing agency:
Secretaria de Programacion y Presupuesto
Coordinacion General de Sistema Nacional de Informacion
Direccion General de Estudioes del Territorio Nacional
Estados Unidos Mexicanos

ROADS - Data Source Information

Method of Digital Input: Heads-up digitizing using ArcView 3.2, based on a 300-dpi scan of original map.  Roads (including paths) were digitized from two different maps.

Roads north of latitude 27 45 N were digitized from:

TELEGRAPH LINES - Data Source Information

Method of Digital Input: Heads-up digitizing using ArcView 3.2, based on a 300-dpi scan of original map. Telegraph lines were digitized from two different maps. At the time of their printing, the telegraph lines were no longer in use.

Telegraph lines north of latitude 27 45 N were digitized from:
Carta Geologica
G14A17 Villa Hidalgo - E.U.M. Coahuila Y Nuevo Leon, E.U.A. Texas.
Date of Original Map (First Edition): 1979
